Infused water, also known as detox water, refers to regular drinking water that has been used to soak fruits, vegetables or herbs. What happens here is the flavours, vitamins and minerals from the fruit or herb ooze into the water. What you are left with is naturally flavoured water that is refreshing, easy to consume and more wholesome that regular, old, lacklustre water.

Helps you drink more water

Generally, the advice is that you should drink eight glasses of water each day. But with Diabetes the urgency of consuming more water is doubled. The condition has a way of dehydrating you. This is especially true when blood glucose levels are on the rise. Here, drinking water helps flush out extra glucose and nourishes the body so it doesn’t get dehydrated.dehydrate.  Don’t wait for an incident. Building a habit takes take. So, as part of the drill, why not make regular H2O more enjoyable?

Infused water is a fun way to get the whole family to drink more water. Infused berries or even rosemary to add some zing to an otherwise mundane task.

Colas, ice-teas, flavoured milk and packaged fruit juices are stuffed with dead calories and an astounding amount of sugar. Any of these drinks will immediately throw you off your diet plan. Think of it as undoing weeks or months of hard work!

You can use it to entertain

It’s the latest trend and one that is soon catching steam. If you feel the pressure to conform during parties, don’t let sodas and sugary drinks derail your diet. Instead, get infused water to be the star of any party.

For guests, you can add alcohol of their choice. Kids can enjoy it with some soda for the added bubbles. Infused water does good things to all people. Pour it in a slender glass and add some fresh pieces of fruit before you serve.  

Here are a few recipes to get you started:

1. Lemons and ginger:

Slice lemons; peel and thinly slice ginger. Place lemon slices, ginger slices, and cinnamon sticks in a large pitcher; fill the container with water. Store in the refrigerator. Careful to not leave any peel or it might turn the water slightly bitter. Infused water can be stored for up to three days in the refrigerator.

2. Strawberry, Basil and Lemon:

To 1/2 cup strawberries stemmed and sliced, fresh or frozen add 5 large basil leaves torn and 1 lemon thinly sliced. As a general rule, soak for three hours and sieve to remove fruit. Fruits will rot if left overnight. Herbs won’t.

3. Cucumber, lime, strawberry and mint:

Crush tulsi or mint leaves to speed up the infusion process. Add slices of lime, strawberry and cucumber for a refreshing sip. Sieve and add fresh cucumber pieces when you serve.
